Top 10 Mines in Sweden
Sweden's mining tradition extends from the medieval copper and silver mines of Bergslagen through the iron ore fields of Norrbotten that helped arm both sides of the First World War. The country produced the world's first systematic mining law (Bergordnung, 1649), the world's first industrial safety regulations for mines, and the global metallurgical science that made the modern metals industry possible. It also produces some of the most interesting show mines in Europe.
1. Falun Copper Mine, Dalarna (UNESCO)
Stora Kopparberget (Great Copper Mountain) at Falun is one of the world's most important industrial heritage sites. Copper commodity; active from at least the 9th century to 1992, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. At peak production in the seventeenth century, Falun provided two-thirds of the world's copper and its revenues financed Sweden's Baltic empire. The mine is entered today via the Great Pit (Stora Stöten) — a collapse crater 100 metres deep and 340 metres wide formed by a catastrophic subsidence in 1687 — and underground guided tours extend into original 17th-century workings. The associated mining city of Falun retains its coloured timber buildings; the distinctive red oxide paint used throughout Sweden (Falun rödfärg) is a by-product of the mine's pyrite processing.
2. Kiruna Iron Ore Mine, Norrbotten
Kiruna, in the Arctic north of Sweden, hosts the world's largest underground iron ore mine. Iron commodity; operated by LKAB (Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB), continuously active since 1898. The mine has created a subsidence zone that has required the relocation of most of the city of Kiruna — approximately 6,000 residents and thousands of structures, including the historic kirche (city hall, voted Sweden's most beautiful building and physically moved) — to a new site 3 kilometres east. The relocation, scheduled for completion around 2035, is the largest planned urban relocation in modern European history. Underground tours are available to the public.
3. Sala Silver Mine, Västmanland
Sala Silvergruva has been worked continuously for silver and lead from 1510 to 1962 — one of the longest documented working histories of any European mine. Silver-lead commodity; closed 1962, now a museum with underground tours. The mine descends to 155 metres and maintains a constant temperature of 2°C; it offers overnight stays in an underground hotel room (the world's coldest hotel room, at 2°C with warming sleeping equipment provided). The surface buildings include seventeenth-century managers' residences and mining offices.
4. Långban, Värmland
Långban is perhaps the world's most celebrated single locality for mineralogical specimens. Iron-manganese commodity; worked from the 16th century to 1972. The Långban deposit has produced over 80 mineral species first described from this locality — type localities of hauyne, richterite, manganoan diopside, and dozens of others — including specimens of extraordinary aesthetic quality. The Långban Mineralmuseum in the former mine manager's house holds a significant collection and is open during summer.
5. Garpenberg, Dalarna
Garpenberg is one of the oldest continuously worked metal mines in the world, with silver and base-metal production documented from 1299. Silver-zinc-lead- copper commodity; operated today by Boliden AB, active to depths exceeding 1,400 metres. A heritage surface trail through the Garpenberg Gammelgruva (old mine area) documents the early modern workings. The current underground operation is one of the most productive silver mines in Europe.
6. Aitik Copper Mine, Norrbotten
Aitik near Gällivare is the largest open-pit copper mine in Europe and one of the largest in the world. Copper-gold-silver commodity; operated by Boliden, active since 1968. Surface views from the designated overlook; no underground access. At approximately 550 metres deep and 3 kilometres long, Aitik produces around 40 million tonnes of ore per year. It is one of the lowest-grade large copper mines in operation, economically viable because of its enormous scale.
7. Pajala Iron, Norrbotten
The Kaunisvaara iron ore deposit near Pajala was developed by Northland Resources from 2010 to 2014 when the company entered bankruptcy, having built a processing plant and begun production before collapsing. Iron commodity; development 2010–2014, idled. The story of Kaunisvaara is taught in mining finance circles as a case study in the risks of junior developer iron ore projects in commodity downturns.
8. Norberg Iron and Historical Mining District, Västmanland
Norberg in Bergslagen was a centre of charcoal iron smelting from medieval times through the nineteenth century. Iron commodity; principal production ended nineteenth century, heritage district preserved. The Norberg Mining Area is a candidate on the Swedish UNESCO Tentative List as part of the broader Bergslagen industrial landscape nomination. The preserved blast furnace at Ängelsberg, within the Bergslagen region, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1993).
9. Boliden Gold Mine (historic), Västerbotten
The Boliden gold deposit in Västerbotten was discovered in 1924 and gave its name to the Boliden company now operating across northern Europe. Gold-arsenic commodity; worked 1926–1967. The Boliden Area Heritage Site in Skellefteå municipality includes the original smelter (now a museum) and the drainage system. Boliden's arsenic production created significant contamination at the Kristineberg mine and at the Rönnskär smelter on the coast.
10. Stripa Iron and Research Mine, Örebro
The Stripa mine in Bergslagen was an iron mine converted in the 1970s and 1980s to a major international research programme for radioactive waste repository concepts — the Stripa Project, funded by Sweden, the USA, Canada, Japan, and the OECD NEA. Iron-research commodity; iron production ended 1977, research programme 1976–1992. The research demonstrated the hydrogeological feasibility of granitic rock repositories and contributed directly to modern nuclear waste disposal science.
Planning a Swedish Mining Route
Falun and Garpenberg are both in Dalarna, two to three hours from Stockholm, and combine naturally. The Bergslagen region between Falun and Örebro contains a dozen heritage sites within a day's drive. Kiruna requires a flight or an overnight train from Stockholm; allow two days for the mine tour and the city relocation context. All Swedish sites are on the interactive map.
Swedish Mining Science
Sweden's contribution to mineralogy and mining science is disproportionate to its size. The Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele identified manganese, barium, molybdenum, tungsten, and chlorine, most from minerals collected in the Bergslagen district. Axel Fredrik Cronstedt discovered nickel in 1751 from the mineral niccolite at Garphyttan, Bergslagen. Johan Gottlieb Gahn isolated manganese from pyrolusite in 1774. The Uppsala and Stockholm universities maintained mineralogy collections closely linked to the mining industry through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm holds one of the finest Scandinavian mineral collections, much of it derived from the Bergslagen mines.
The Swedish Bergmästare (mine master) system, which assigned regional government oversight of all mining operations from the seventeenth century onward, created an unusual combination of state regulation and private enterprise that preserved ore body data and mine records in ways that made the later development of Swedish economic geology particularly systematic. The Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU), founded in 1858, is one of the oldest national geological surveys in the world and its archives are a significant resource for mine heritage researchers.
Bergslagen as Heritage Region
The Bergslagen region of central Sweden — covering roughly the area between Falun, Örebro, and Västerås — is the most historically significant mining district in Scandinavia. The UNESCO Engelsberg Ironworks (1993) within Bergslagen preserves the most complete surviving early industrial blast furnace complex in the world. The region as a whole, including Falun, the Ängelsberg ironworks, and multiple smaller heritage sites, functions as an open-air museum of the pre-industrial metals economy that sustained Sweden for five centuries.
